10 BJP, 2 Samajwadi Party candidates set to get elected unopposed to UP Legislative Council

The nomination papers of Independent candidate Mahesh Chandra Sharma getting rejected following scrutiny on Tuesday, clearing way for unopposed selection of 12 candidates – 10 from BJP and two from Samajwadi Party – to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

Sources said Sharma’s nomination papers were incomplete and did not have the required number of proposers.

With just 12 candidates left for 12 seats, an election is, therefore, not necessary. However, the official declaration will be made after January 21, the last day of withdrawal of nomination.

The 10 BJP candidates, who will now go to the Legislative Council are former bureaucrat A K Sharma, who joined the party last week, Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma, BJP state president Swatantra Dev Singh, senior party functionaries Laxman Prasad Acharya, Kunwar Manvendra Singh, Govind Narayan Shukla, Salil Bishnoi, Ashwani Tyagi, Dharamveer Prajapati and Surendra Chaudhary. The two Samajwadi Party candidates are veteran leader Ahmed Hassan and party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary.

Apart from the unopposed selection of these 12 candidates, the polls will also mean that the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council will have a new Chairman. The present Chairman, Ramesh Yadav, will retire on January 30. This time, as the SP will send only two candidates to the Upper House, the party did not.

re-nominate Yadav, instead chose Ahmed Hassan who was also an existing member along with Rajendra Chaudhary.

With this poll, the number of BJP members in the legislative council will increase from 25 to 32, but SP will still have the majority in the Upper House with 51 members. Thus, the SP is likely to have an upper hand in the selection of a new Chairman unless other parties and Independent members back some other candidate.

BJP far more dangerous than Maoists: Mamata Banerjee

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday called BJP “more dangerous than the Maoists” and accused the party of making false promises to the people before elections and then do a vanishing act after winning.

The Trinamool Congress chief also said that she was not perturbed by defections in her party, saying “politics is a solemn ideology and philosophy and one cannot change these things every day like clothes”.

Addressing a rally in Purulia, Banerjee hit out at the BJP, which had won all the Lok Sabha seats in the district, including those in the Jangalmahal area, during the 2019 general elections.

“You all voted for the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, but does your MP visit you? Have they given you anything? They will make false promises before the elections and once it’s over, they will flee,” she said, adding that tribals were misled by the BJP in the last Lok Sabha elections.

“In Bengal, BJP is more seen in media than on the ground. The party is using IT (Information Technology) to scare and intimidate the Opposition. They have created WhatsApp groups to spread fake news. BJP is far more dangerous than Maoists,” Banerjee hit out.

Banerjee said the Maoists have come back to the mainstream in the state and that her government has given them jobs as special home guards. The TMC has inducted Chhatradhar Mahato, a former leader of Maoist-backed People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA), who had hogged the limelight during the Lalgarh movement in the tribal-dominated Junglemahal area at the fag end of the erstwhile Left Front rule in the state.

Mahato was set free in February last year by the state government following a reduction in his life term to 10 years by Calcutta High Court for his good conduct.

Alleging that BJP leaders have insulted Birsa Munda, the Trinamool chief mocked the party for not able to correctly pronounce “Bangla”. “They say Bangal, but they are kangal (destitute) for votes,” she added.

Comparing BJP with a snake, the TMC chief said that the party annihilates anyone that comes into its grip.

With Trinamool MLAs and leaders joining the BJP ahead of the polls, Banerjee call the desertions “good riddance”. “Those who want to join BJP can go, but we will never bow our heads to it… Politics is a solemn ideology, philosophy; one can change clothes daily but not the ideologies,” she said.

She said those who have left the party would have disturbed the organisation had they remained in the Trinamool. “There are three types of people in politics – lobhi (greedy), bhogi (those who enjoy power) and tyagi (abstainers from indulgence),” she said.

Dismissing projections in pre-poll surveys, she claimed that “lies” are being dished out on behest of the BJP.

“The Trinamool will get four times the number of seats that they are projecting,” she said, alleging that BJP propaganda machinery was circulating fake videos in social media.

Accusing the BJP, Congress and CPI(M) of being “brothers in arms”, she alleged the Left party has handed over its votes to the saffron party.

Left Front and the Congress have decided to fight Bengal polls together.

She said farmers are agitating over their demands for repealing the farm laws for more than a month, while the peasants are happy in the TMC-ruled Bengal.

Asserting that Purulia has never bowed to the outsiders, Banerjee said that the TMC government has done everything for the development of the adivasis, including formation of West Bengal Santhal Academy, apart from giving recognition to their language ‘Ol Chiki’.

She said class XII students in the state will get Rs 10,000 each in their bank account “within a day or two” for buying tablets or smartphones for their studies in the virtual mode.

Admitting that Purulia suffers from water supply problems, the Chief Minister said that projects worth thousands of crores of Rupees have been taken up by her government for supplying drinking water to every household.

Banerjee said that thousands of jobs will be created with the Dankuni-Amritsar freight corridor route passing through Raghunathpur in Purulia and an industrial park coming up in Joypur in the district.

  • Rubina Dilaik and Rahul Vaidya were heading the teams
  • Bigg Boss teased the housemates with some food

New Delhi:

In tonight’s episode of the TV reality show Bigg Boss 14, all the inmates were seen fighting for basic necessities. After all the captaincy tasks were halted by all the contestants, Bigg Boss decided to punish them by introducing another task, as a part of which they had to earn basic necessities like food, using the furniture. The contestants woke up to the tunes of Its The Time To Disco, after which the task was introduced. During the task, the housemates were divided into two teams – red team and yellow team. The red team was headed by Rubina Dilaik and it counted Abhinav Shukla, Rakhi Sawant, Vikas Gupta and Devoleena among its members. The yellow team’s leader was Rahul Vaidya and it comprised Arshi Khan, Nikki Tamboli, Aly Goni and Sonali Phogat. As a part of the task, all the contestants had to stay in the garden area and a point had to be deducted from their team if they went indoors. The winning team would be given the opportunity to purchase eatables from the BB Mall.

In another segment of the show, Rubina Dilaik got into an intense fight with Rahul Vaidya. He got angry at Rubina after her teammate Vikas Gupta hid the essentials box. Rubina schooled her team and decided to move forward. During the task, Rahul Vaidya commented on Rubina Dilaik and Abhinav Shukla’s relationship, which made Rubina more furious. Rubina too made a remark about Rahul Vaidya’s girlfriend Disha Parmar, who he had proposed during the TV show last year. Rahul asked Rubina not to drag her in the game. He said that Abhinav and Rubina are part of the show, while she isn’t.

Arshi Khan blocked the way to the washroom for the opposing teams. Nikki Tamboli, who was in Aly Goni’s team, decided to root for her friend Rubina Dilaik, who was in the opposing team. She lied to Rahul Vaidya about using the washroom and then went on to do her make-up and used more units of the house. Aly Goni  said that he is missing Eijaz Khan, who had to leave the show on Monday’s episode due to his prior commitments. Devoleena entered the show as Eijaz Khan’s proxy in the show. Meanwhile, Vikas Gupta too got back in the game. During the task, a burger, some french-fries were placed in the house and each food item was worth three units. Nikki Tamboli went inside and ate a plate, which deducted 3 points from her team.

Six nabbed for attack on Mangaluru cop to avenge police firing during anti-CAA protests

Announcing the arrest of six men who had allegedly attacked a police officer in broad daylight in the city last month, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner N Shashikumar on Tuesday linked the incident to the police firing during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in December 2019.

“Called ‘Maya Gang’, the accused had attacked head constable Ganesh Kamath in a bid to avenge the (police firing) incident during the violence in December 2019. The gang picked out the officer as a random target to get back at the police after the firing incident,” he said.

The arrestees have been identified as Anish Ashraf (22), Abdul Khader Fahad (23), Sheik Mohammed Harrias (31), Mohammed Kayis (24), Rahil (18) and Mohammed Nawaz (30).

The head constable was attacked with a sword by an unknown assailant near New Chithra junction on December 16, 2020 after which a case of attempt to murder was registered and the matter investigated by the police.

The commissioner said, “The accused clearly indulged in a conspiracy which posed a threat to the lives of policemen. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the conspiracy wasn’t hatched in a day, as a series of meetings were held in different places where the gang firmed up the plan on where to gather, who all to include in the attack, how to evade arrest and not to use mobile phones to communicate, among things.”

Police added that four of those arrested are from the notorious gang based in Ullal, while the remaining two belong to a different group. “Nawaz, a resident of Bantwal, has been found to be a relative of a person who died in the firing in December 2019. Further investigation is underway to identify others involved in the incident,” the officer said.

BBC apologises for ‘incomplete’ India map after complaint

The BBC on Tuesday apologised for any offence caused and rectified what it termed as the mistaken use of an inaccurate map of India, which had the boundaries of Jammu and Kashmir entirely missing, triggering a formal letter of complaint by Labour Party MP Virendra Sharma.

In a video broadcast about President-elect Joe Biden on BBC World Service entitled ‘US Election 2020: What do countries around the world want from Joe Biden’, the graphic depicting the map of India was incompletely highlighted in red with the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir missing.

Sharma, who is also chair of the Indo-British All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), termed the action as “deeply insulting” in a letter addressed to the Director General of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Tim Davie, and called for an explanation of the editorial guidelines followed.

“This map shows an incomplete India, it does not highlight Jammu and Kashmir which is recognised as a core and integral part of India. To represent Jammu and Kashmir as anything less than Indian is deeply insulting to millions of Indians living here in the UK and in India,” read his letter, issued on Monday.

It called on the BBC to withdraw the graphic and republish with the correct geographical boundaries and also called for action to prevent this happening again.

“The BBC World Service is a fantastic resource, an amazing part of our soft-power and a real force for good around the world, this record is under threat if the World Service is perceived as partisan and ‘anti-India’ as is currently being asserted online. As a member of the International Development Select Committee, I have seen the great work the World Service can do, I do not want to see that put at risk,” added Sharma, who represents the heavily Indian diaspora constituency of Ealing-Southall in west London.

His letter followed a social media outpouring over the issue, with members of the Indian diaspora demanding immediate action.

The BBC responded with an apology and updated the online broadcast with the map of India reflecting the boundaries of Jammu and Kashmir in the standard format used by the news channel in the UK.

“From London we mistakenly published a map of India online which contained inaccuracies and is not the standard map used by BBC News. It has now been corrected. We apologise for any offence caused,” a BBC spokesperson said.
