Haryana minister Vij demands removal of ‘Tandav’ from Amazon platform

Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij on Tuesday said Amazon Prime Video’s political saga ‘Tandav’ should be removed from the digital platform, saying it had allegedly hurt the sentiments of Hindu community.

Talking to media persons here, he said the Union government should make a provision wherein no web series can be screened without being passed by the censor board.

“It (series) should be immediately removed from the Amazon platform because it attacks our system, politics, social fabric, young generation, and the Prime Minister’s office,” Vij said.

Meanwhile, protests erupted at some places in Haryana on Tuesday against the series. The Bajrang Dal activists burnt effigies of makers and actors of the web series.

The cast and crew of ‘Tandav’ had on Monday issued an unconditional apology if their fictional show had “unintentionally” hurt sentiments.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry had also sought an explanation from Amazon Prime Video and BJP MP Manoj Kotak wrote to minister Prakash Javadekar in this regard.

Trouble had escalated for the Ali Abbas Zafar directed thriller with an FIR against its makers in Lucknow and several politicians and others adding their voice to the “ban Tandav” chorus.

The government recently brought OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar, besides other online news and current affairs content, under the ambit of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, giving it powers to regulate policies and rules for the digital space.

Providing official secret info to journalist ‘criminal act’: Rahul Gandhi on purported Arnab chats

Providing official secret information to a journalist is a “criminal act” and both the giver and the receiver will have to go to jail, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday referring to the purported WhatsApp chats of Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami doing the rounds of social media.

Addressing a press conference, Gandhi said only five people — Prime Minister, Defence Minister, Home Minister, Air Force chief and National Security Advisor — were privy to the information, referring to allegations that the reported chats showed Goswami being privy to the Balakot air strikes beforehand.

“Information was with 4-5 people. In such missions, information is not given to the pilot, it was with the Air Chief, Prime Minister, Home Minister, Defence Minister and NSA. Out of these five people, one has given information to this person. This is a criminal act. We will have to find out who did it, and both (the giver and the receiver) will have to go to jail,” he said.

“This process should start, but this process will not start because the prime minister may have given the information,” he alleged.

Addressing a press conference here, Gandhi said, “The law will take its own course, but I have an observation. This was top-secret information, this was not provided to anybody else.”

“Giving official secret information to a journalist is a criminal act, both on the part of the person who accepted it and on the part of the person who gave it,” he said.

These people call themselves patriots, but there is nothing patriotic about putting the Air Force at risk, the Congress leader said.

He said there is nothing patriotic about taking political advantage over the strikes.

“If Mr Arnab Goswami knows, if it is on his WhatsApp, I assume the Pakistanis also know it. It is not a very big jump. It is a criminal act and that investigation should begin,” Gandhi said.

Referring to the contents of the purported chats, Gandhi said the distressing thing is that after the 2019 Pulwama attack, the journalist said that “this is good for us”.

“This is a reflection of the mind of the prime minister that it is good that 40 of our people have been killed and we will win the elections,” he alleged.

On February 26, 2019, India had launched airstrikes on what was said to be JeM”s training camp in Pakistan”s Balakot.

Senior TV journalist Nidhi Razdan files complaint with Delhi Police

Delhi Police’s cyber crime cell will investigate a complaint received from senior TV journalist Nidhi Razdan who has said she was a victim of a phishing scam in which she was given a fraudulent offer of a position of Associate Professor at the Harvard University.

Razdan filed the complaint with the Delhi Police on Monday regarding commission of cognisable offences including forgery, cheating, identity fraud and impersonation by unknown accused against her. Earlier, she had filed a similar complaint with the Jammu and Kashmir Police on January 16 when she was in Srinagar.

A senior Delhi Police officer said that an investigation would be undertaken on the basis of the complaint which was filed at a police station in South East district. A series of emails exchanged with those behind the alleged scam as well as other documents connected with the matter have been enclosed with the complaint.

Her lawyer Shri Singh said Razdan had received an email in December 2019 containing a purported offer from Harvard University for teaching journalism. Thereafter, she resigned as Executive Editor of NDTV last June.

However, she had come to know last week that a series of emails and forged documents sent over a period of one year were an elaborate scam to dishonestly and fraudulently cause loss to her, Singh said.

Razdan has urged the cyber crime cell to undertake a detailed and thorough investigation to trace the accused and register an FIR in this regard.

She has also asked Harvard University to register a complaint with the FBI or other relevant authorities to investigate this crime, according to the lawyer.
